JOB SUMMARY


Medical Directors assume responsibility for understanding the scientific and clinical aspects of their assigned businesses in depth, and serve as a key strategic resource for both internal teams and clients. They will leverage science in brand differentiation and communications, collaborate with copywriters/medical writers to represent the scientific perspective throughout strategic/creative development, and ensure scientific and clinical relevance. At all levels, the Medical Directors will continue to develop their strategic skill set in an effort to uncover the most compelling way in which to differentiate a brand or franchise from a medically viable, but compelling perspective. Demonstration of excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong analytical and interpretive skills, is needed.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


Client Relations

Lead medically related client interactions across multiple accounts


Team Management & Development

Provide a day to day oversight, training and development of direct reports


New Business

Actively participate as a member of new business pitch teams when needed


JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


Knowledge/Expertise

• Demonstrate depth of understanding for multiple products and disease states

• Critically review content developed by others in the agency, including copywriters, medical writers, and AMDs

• Demonstrate the ability to distill down the medical and scientific information into strategic insights and actionable ideas for the brand

• Proactively and proficiently provide strategic medical recommendations based on the changing market to enhance brand communications

• Have deep understanding of our capabilities as well as those of our competitors

• Keep abreast of new and changing trends in our industry to ensure we provide the most “up-to-date” recommendations for our brands

Strategic Skills/Tools

• Proactively identify medical opportunities that contribute to strategic and tactical development

• Ensure teams are optimizing the use of data to tell a viable, differentiating story

• Develop depth of understanding for assigned products, related medical areas, and competitors

• Ensure that projects are technically accurate and audience appropriate

• Think beyond the confines of our ask – determine strategically where and when we should partner with one of our sister companies to provide comprehensive brand partnership

 

Client Relationships

• Lead medically-related client interactions across multiple pieces of business

• Participate in senior leader client meetings with your account and strategic planning partners

 

Business Development

• Lead research and development efforts for new business pitches

• Begin to be able to draft the ""medical hook"" portion of a pitch presentation under supervision

• Help drive the strategic recommendations for the pitch

• Be a part of the core pitch team both internal and during the live presentation

• Co-lead the medical portion/immersion of a pitch presentation

• Help guide and mentor your direct reports during the pitch process

• Provide recommendations on who and why your direct reports should lead a pitch

 

Communication/Selling Skills

• Clearly communicate medical concepts across multiple pieces of business in a condensed, audience-appropriate way to client, KOLs and agency

• Independently, confidently and credibly present the medical hook at new business pitches and client meeting

• Clearly communication agency and team needs to the CMO to ensure success for your team

• Project confidence as the expert in therapeutic categories

 

Teamwork/Collaboration

• Manage workflow of assigned products and ensure team deadlines are met

• Demonstrate willingness to work beyond basic responsibilities to assist your teams

• Always proactively participate in and contribute to discussions at team meetings to set example for reports

• Work closely with the other senior medical leaders to ensure collaborations

• Work closely with the CMO to ensure appropriate staffing and resources

 

Creativity/Innovation/Engagement

• Proactively recommend initiatives that support marketing strategies

• Continue to identify and develop new deliverables

 

Management/ Leadership

• Supervise a team of AMDs/MDs/MWs - teach them SOPs, give ongoing performance feedback; help with growth of skill sets; shadow, review all work and set examples until you feel they are ready to take on projects independently

• Instill confidence in your team as well as the broader medical department by showing true leadership skills above and beyond brand deliverables

• Build morale among your team and begin to work with other teams providing leadership to the broader medical group

• Immerse yourself in your direct reports brands to help guide them on thinking and process

 

Financial Accountability

• Begin to help create job estimates

• Ensure appropriate utilization of your direct reports

• Provide allocation and utilization reports to the CMO for your team

• Complete timesheets and submit expense reports accurately and on time

• Develop ability to reasonably estimate hours required to complete specific projects

Master of Science (MS)

Master of Public Health (MPH)

MD

PharmD

Doctorate



EXPERIENCE REQUIRED/PREFERRED - 5 years


KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS


Microsoft Excel

Proficient in advanced functions and formulas to perform VLOOKUP, pivot tables, charts, graphs and data capture
